PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Bob Pacharzina
Having taken a couple of weeks off for a little “down time” from the wonderful week of
FUN, FELLOWSHIP, FRIENDS, and FANTASTIC GOLF, it’s now time to begin looking
forward to the 2008 venue at Prince Edward Island, Canada. Before doing that; however,
I would like to personally thank everyone for their participation at the Horseshoe Bay
venue. From the “on site” comments to the large number of positive emails received, it
seems to have been a wonderful and rewarding experience for everyone. The golf provided
challenges, the tours were outstanding, and the evening activities were exceptionally
good. Most of all, we all had the opportunity to renew old friendships and to make some
new ones. The FELLOWSHIP of the USGFR was, and will continue to be, the primary
function and focus of our organization. A special “glad you came” to the first timers. We
hope that your xperience was rewarding and that you will make future USGFR venues
one of your first options on your list of things to do.
While visiting in Virginia, I chose to wear my USGFR Horseshoe Bay golf cap most of the
time. Funny thing happened in South Hill, Va. and the Atlanta airport: I was greeted by
four other Rotarians who noticed the Rotary logo and wanted to know where I was from
and wanted information about the cap and our USGFR tournament. Go figure!!!! This
gave me an idea. I would like to encourage all of you to wear your HSB cap whenever you
play golf and ESPECIALLY to your Rotary meetings and makeup meetings. I can almost
guarantee you that someone will greet you as a fellow Rotarian because of the cap.
If they are Rotarians and they play golf, you will have a golden opportunity to recruit a
new member for the SGFR. New members are the lifeline of any organization. The
USGFR is no exception.
I would like encourage each of you to make a commitment to bring one (or more) new
members to one of the next two venues. Why not give a friend and fellow Rotarian an
opportunity to COME TEST DRIVE WITH THE USGFR.
Now on to P.E.I. Prince Edward Island, Canada. Can’t wait. How about YOU?
Bob Pacharzina

TOURNAMENT EVENTS AT HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS
Thursday, September 27
3 PM Board of Directors Meeting
6 PM social hour and dinner at the yacht club
Additional information pertaining to Board decisions at this
venue will be discussed later in this newsletter.
Friday, September 28
The day started at 9 AM with the practice golf round and
lunch after golf. The non-golfers toured a Horseshoe bay
spec house worth millions and then on to Marble Falls for a
style show (which included cute male models), lunch and
shopping on Main Street. The evening started with the
traditional players and tour meetings. We then proceeded
to the flag raising ceremony which included a color guard
and Sue Sherwood singing our National Anthem and God
Bless America. Of course we all joined in, ON KEY.
The evening was capped off with hors d’oeurves, liquid
refreshments and a putting contest which included a skins game (won by Weston Pacharzina, $480). First place with a
cool 51 was Chuck McAlpine, 2nd place was Marion
Fukushima and 3rd place went to Ed Anderson. What a great
start to a wonderful four days in the heart of Texas, USA.
Saturday, September 29
Golfers:
Our first round of golf started at Apple Rock golf course,
the first of the three Robert Trent Jones courses. Weather
was sunny and warm. We had lots of golf with good food at
lunch time. Winners of closest to pin were as follows. Flights
1 and 2: Keith Howard, Larry Benevento, Bob Blum, and
Pat Clarke. Winners in Flights 3 and 4: Glen Smith, Weston
Pacharzina, Saul Seltzer, and Terry Trotter. Special congratulations
to first-timer Bob Blum for his hole-in-one on the
first day of competition! Way to go, Bob!
Non-Golfers:
The day started early on the bus to San Antonio for a stop
in the German Immigrant neighborhood to tour a lovely
old Victorian home, then a stop at the San Jose Mission to
see the Rose Window. The highlight was lunch on the river
barge which ended with the wonderful Tres Leche Cake.
After lunch there was a stop for picture taking at the Alamo
and an afternoon of shopping (what else) in the historic
La Villitia area.
The evening was topped off with a BBQ and Cowboy Show
at the ranch of Billie and Bob Black where boots, jeans and
long necks were in style. We also enjoyed an evening of
western and country songs provided by none other than
John Arthur Martinez. There were a lot of tired puppies
when we ended the evening. BELIEVE ME!
!
Beginning on Saturday the Rotary Club of Marble Falls
hosted the Hospitality Room which was filled with liquid
refreshments and a large quantity of snacks and goodies.
The Hospitality Room was open each day for the participants
to enjoy fellowship.
